About the Author

Welcome to the blog!

My name is Jessica Palmer.
I grew up in Howard County, Maryland and I am currently a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, where I study biological sciences. After graduating, I will be attending medical school to start my training to become a physician. In my spare time, I volunteer as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the College Park Fire Department. I also love to engage in other volunteering experiences in my community, such as serving food in D.C. and tutoring elementary school students. Additionally, I am an outdoor enthusiast. I once backpacked 20 miles through the Appalachian Trail, and have thoroughly enjoyed climbing up natural boulders.

My personal interests have shaped my interests in media. As an EMT, communication and ethical issues around media are integral to my job. Media outlets often report on calls that I go on, and patients are often educated about medical problems through the media. After taking this course, I hope to apply my newfound knowledge about media issues to my career in medicine, as I believe that media affects the daily life of nearly every professional field. I was particularly interested in taking this course after I took an honors seminar related to media frontiers several years ago. As my generation uses social media very often, I especially have an interest in understanding the impacts of social media in a digital age. Overall, I hope to become more attentive to the world around me through this course.

My questions related to media:

  • How has media evolved over time?
  • How do we anticipate media to shift in the future?
  • What are different viewpoints on ethical issues related to media?
